The Nutcracker

Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman

ACT I
PROLOGUE
Nuremberg, Germany
In the home of Mayor  and Frau Silberhaus, arrangements are being made for a Christmas Party. The guests arrive and are graciously greeted by the Silberhaus parents and children, Fritz and Clara.

SCENE 1: THE PARTY
At the party, parents and children dance, visit and exchange gifts. Clara's godfather, the magical Herr Drosselmeyer arrives bringing two gifts for the children. Life-sized Columbine and Soldier Dolls, which come to life and dance-everyone is in awe. An argument ensues between Fritz and Clara, resulting in Fritz kicking Clara. Herr Drosselmeyer comforts Clara by giving her a Nutcracker. This new toy enchants Clara, but Fritz grabs it from her and breaks it. Clara sobs until Herr Drosselmeyer fixes the Nutcracker. All the girls join in a lullaby dance with their new dolls. Not to be outdone, Fritz conspires with his friends to disrupt the girls. Frau Silberhaus intervenes and invites grandmother to dance for the guests. When it is time for all the guests to leave, Clara and Fritz thank their parents and go off to bed, but Clara must leave her Nutcracker by the tree.

SCENE 2: THE BATTLE
Clara sneaks into the parlor to watch over her nutcracker, where she is frightened by oversized mice led by a King Rat. Herr Drosselmeyer appears and with his powers, brings the Nutcracker to life and makes the Christmas tree grow. The Nutcracker courageously protects Clara by calling out Toy Soldiers to engage the Mice in battle. The Nutcracker leads his troops against the furry villains using the finest military techniques, and defeats the evil  King Rat. Then something wonderful happens, the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome young prince. The prince takes Clara on a magical journey to the Land of the Snow.

SCENE 3: THE LAND OF THE SNOW
In a forest in the Land of the Snow dwells the Snow Queen and her Cavalier. They command a Snow Fairy to lead the Snowflakes in a Dance. Clara and the Prince ride in a sleigh to be greeted by the Snow Queen and her Cavalier.

ACT II
PROLOGUE
Lovely flowers and the Dew Drop Fairy
dance at the entrance of a beautiful palace...

SCENE 1; KINGDOM OF THE SWEETS
Clara and the Prince arrive and tell their story to the Dew Drop Fairy. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier enter and greet the young guests. Clara and the Prince are seated on the dais, overlooking the Great Hall of the Palace, and an immediate celebration in Clara's honor is begun. One after another, Spanish Dancers, Arabian Dancers; Mirlitons, Russian Dancers, Mother Gigone and her naughty. Children and finally Flowers all dance for Clara and the prince.
As a special tribute to Clara and the prince, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier dance a pas de deux.  When it is time for Clara to go, everyone bids her farewell.  The Prince presents her with a memento of her adventure; a small wooden nutcracker.  Clara’s magical adventure ends!
